Television documentries

Documentaries and related works.

I worked on documentaries and related graphic/digital design works for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and/or filmmakers David and Elizabeth Perra Cook, and Archie Roach.

Project 1

In 2007 Archie Roach (with the support of the Lingari Foundation) asked me to work on an ambitious documentary called Liyarn Ngarn, looking at deaths in custody and land rights. In the language of the Yawaru people, from the West Kimberly region around Broome, Liyarn Ngarn means 'the coming together of the spirit'.

David Teo edited the original video, but it was too long, didn’t fit together and needed to be cut back.

My role was to:

  1. Re-edit the documentary to make it more of a compelling story, to be played at the Melbourne Museum Launch with a due date in just over a month. So it was a mad rush job.

  2. Edit it (ideally) into something that could be broadcast on SBS TV or ABC television to have a high impact.

  3. Work with the sound production house to finalise the documentary's sound.

  4. Create opening and closing credit screens.

  5. Export a DVD-quality media-encoding file with chapters.
Create a production-ready DVD for mass production.

  6. Working in collaboration with Kate Mitchell on DVD cover and ticket artwork for Melbourne Museum launch. Original indigenous artwork by Louis Johnson and photography by Brendon Briggs.

Project 2

“Australia: Land of Parrots”, animal documentary, Natural History Unit ABC TV, working for Elizabeth and David Parer- Cook.

My role:

  • Pre-production video editing – convert Avid edit decision list (EDL) into Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP) format so David could create an early promo video to help secure more funding from overseas.

  • Post Production – creating a media pack promotional DVD. Graphic design of DVD cover, media production of DVD menus, media encoding and authoring.

  • Post Production – creating an A4 promotional media pack flyer. Creating the A4 flyer with material from David and Elizabeth.
